Life

Helen Chapin was born on April 12, 1928, in Peking, China.cite-ref-2[2] She was the daughter of diplomat Selden Chapin and Mary Paul Noyes. Her brother, Frederic L. Chapin, would also become a diplomat. She was educated at the Potomac School, the Madeira School, Vassar College, graduating in 1949,cite-ref-nytmarriage-3-0[3] and the American University of Beirut.cite-ref-wp-1-1[1]

She married Rev. Ronald Irvin Metz on July 14, 1951, in The Hague, Netherlands.cite-ref-4[4] The couple settled in Washington, D. C., as they both had jobs in the federal government.cite-ref-nytmarriage-3-1[3]

Metz worked for the Federal Research Division of the Library of Congress, editing 15 Library of Congress Country Study handbooks.cite-ref-wp-1-2[1]

She died in Washington, D.C., on May 13, 2011.cite-ref-wp-1-3[1]
